Disclaimer: This post contains heavy spoilers for all Spider-Man movies. If that concerns you, kindly skip to the end for a plain list of Spider-Man movies in order. BTW, here’s a method to avoid spoilers in the future for hot topics.
Original Spider-Man Trilogy
Sam Raimi is the OG director who launched our favorite Spider-Man character on the big screen. The series consisted of three movies that were loved by audiences and provided a solid foundation for the future of superhero movies. Tobey Maguire’s contribution to making Peter Parker a household name is equally commendable.
The last movies in this series were canceled due to a lack of new storylines and weak scripts. However, what exists as the original Spider-Man trilogy are the best movies to start your adventure of watching Spider-Man films.
1. Spider-Man (2002)
It is the first movie of Sam Raimi’s trilogy and covers the origin story of Spider-Man portrayed by Tobey Maguire. The story begins when a bullied teenager gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gains powers like super speed, superstrength, organic web-shooting, and wall-crawling overnight. While he enjoys his newfound abilities, a robber kills uncle Ben on the streets, an event he could have stopped easily. It leads to a change of mindset, and Spider-Man dedicates his life to helping people in need.
The movie also introduces Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin, a recurring character in marvel comics. His military experiment of creating a super serum goes wrong and gives him a murderous and evil split personality while amplifying his strengths. Will Spider-Man be able to stop this menace from terrorizing the city? Watch the movie to discover.

Trivia
- The scene where Peter catches all the items on the tray as Mary Jane slips into the cafeteria does not include any VFX. Tobey Maguire actually caught all those items on a tray. The scene took 16 hours of filming and 156 takes to get it right.
- Willem Dafoe performed 90% of the stunts himself.
- The movie broke the box office records at the time and became the first film to gross $100 million in its opening weekend alone.
- A brief cameo of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine was planned for the movie. However, filmmakers scrapped the idea since the team could not access Wolverine’s costume from X-men (2000).
- The first time Peter tries to shoot webs, he says some DC comics catchphrases such as “Up, up and away!” and “Shazam!.” These catchphrases are associated with Superman and DC’s Captain Marvel, respectively. Tobey Maguire ad-libbed these lines that were not in the original script.
2. Spider-Man 2 (2004)
The second installment of this franchise, directed by Sam Raimi, talks about the emotional conflict of being a superhero. Peter is devastated by his struggle to fight crime and continue with his studies. He couldn’t even spare time for his love interest and ended up losing her to another guy. Meanwhile, he can’t keep up with any job and always gets fired due to an untimely need to save people. On the other hand, The Daily Bugle, a news publication, paints an evil picture of Spider-Man and gives him a hard time. All these factors take a high toll on Peter’s mental health and his civilian life. To the extent that he loses his powers and decides to give up on his crime-fighting persona.
Meanwhile, Peter’s mentor and friend, a genius scientist, Dr. Otto Octavius, becomes a supervillain named Doctor Octopus after his experiment goes wrong and kills his wife. He is now left with four AI-powered mechanical arms having neurological implants in his spine. They become sentient and try to control his mind and ask him to do everything possible to complete his experiment. His course of action brings Peter’s loved ones and the whole city at stake.

Trivia
- Willem Dafoe’s cameo wasn’t planned for the movie. He was pacing in his apartment when he saw the crew shooting nearby. He went to meet them and say hello, and then the idea for his cameo struck the director. 2. Alfred Molina, who plays Dr. Octopus, actually gave names to his four mechanical tentacles (Larry, Harry, Flo, and Moe). Flo was the top-right tentacle with a motherly emotion because it was the one that gave him sips from drinks and removed his sunglasses.
- There is a picture of Mary Jane on Peter’s apartment wall. It’s the same one he clicked before the radioactive spider bit him. It represents the last moment of Peter’s innocent life before it changed forever.
- Peter’s landlord, Mr. Ditkovitch, is named after the original Spider-Man comic illustrator Steve Ditko.
- Tobey Maguire faked a back injury to get a higher raise for the second film. When the studio came to know, they fired Tobey and signed Jake Gyllenhaal for the role. But, Tobey soon apologized, and things went back to normal. After 15 years, Jake came back as Spider-Man’s villain Mysterio.
3. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
The final movie in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy was one of the reasons the franchise didn’t continue. It was the weakest among any other Spider-Man movie. The plot explores the hardships of your loved one turning against you. Besides, this time spidey has to deal with three villains, a break-up, and conquer himself before saving others.
The story starts off one year after the events of Doctor Octopus’ demise. Peter is managing his love life and fighting crime pretty well. But, then a symbiote from outer space attaches itself with Peter amplifying his powers and negative traits. Harry Osborn, Peter’s former best friend, decides to take up the mantle of Green Goblin and avenge his father’s death. Also, Flint Marko, who supposedly killed uncle Ben, ran away from prison and ended up in the middle of a particle accelerator. The experiment fuses his body with sand and gives him the ability to control it, making him the Sandman. The movie places Peter among his friends turning on him, his foes, and himself tearing apart.

Trivia
- Many scenes were shot but cut from the movie. Some of them include Peter (in his black suit) leaving criminals strung up, Peter freaking out when he sees the nightmarish look of Venom in the mirror, and many other character-building scenes.
- Thomas Church broke three of his knuckles in the subway fighting scene, unaware that the foam brick was still not placed in position.
- Negative critical response to this movie was one of the reasons the last three planned movies were canceled in the franchise.
- The movie still managed to become the highest-grossing film of 2007.
- Kirsten Dunst plays the role of redhead Mary Jane while she is a natural blonde. Bryce Dallas Howard, a natural redhead, plays blonde Gwen Stacy.
The Amazing Spider-Man Reboot
After Marvel Studios changed the scenario of how we used to see superhero movies, Sony made a desperate attempt to reboot what it had at hand. Sony could have only made a new Spider-Man movie with minimal characters at disposal, which they did with director Marc Webb starring Andrew Garfield. This series wasn’t critically acclaimed, and both films performed far lower than expectations. Still, it has got some excellent acting performances and introduced new characters to the audiences. Therefore, it’s the second franchise you should watch in the Spider-Man movie sequence.
4. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
The plans for this movie were in talks after Sam Raimi’s franchise got canceled in 2010. The film explores a similar origin story of Peter Parker again with slight twists. Instead of Mary Jane as in the first trilogy, Gwen Stacy is shown as Peter’s love interest. Both characters have been prominent figures in the comics. Peter uses web shooters now opposed to previous iteration in which web were organic.
The plot reveals some details about why Peter’s parents are not present with him. Uncle Ben dies again under different circumstances. But somewhere, the emotional angle of finding and putting down the criminal behind the murder is identical in both Spider-Man film series. Soon in the movie, Peter finds out about his father’s research and his connection with the Oscorp industries. He then goes to Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former research partner, who discovers he is continuing the experiment they were working on.
The film explores more of how Peter avenges the death of his loved ones throughout the movie. Along with his not-so-good life in college. Overall, the film was a great attempt to bring a better Spider-Man on the screen, but the story didn’t add much weight to it, making it one of the least favorite Spider-Man movies for fans.

Trivia
- Andrew Garfield cried the first time he wore the Spider-Man costume.
- The film was released on the 50th anniversary year of Spider-Man’s first appearance in comics.
- Andrew Garfield would go around New York City and play basketball with kids in the Spider-Man costume during shooting breaks.
- It was a creative decision to let Peter make artificial web-shooters to showcase his intelligence.
- Dr. Curt Connors was in Sam Raimi’s trilogy as well, but they weren’t sure about making him the Lizard anytime soon.
5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Next in the order of Spider-Man films comes The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It’s the last Spider-Man movie under Marc Webb’s direction. The plot starts with a happy Spider-Man, which is quite the opposite of how the character is long shown in comics. Usually, some kind of second thoughts always come into Peter’s mind whether he is capable enough or not. In the movie, Peter’s relationship with Gwen conflicts because he vowed to her father. So, Gwen ends the relationship and reveals her plan about going abroad.
On the other side, more powerful villains, including Peter’s old friend, are teaming up to kill Spidey. Meanwhile, the movie also focuses on why his parents left him abruptly and what happened to them. Overall, the film has some excellent VFX work and emotional angles. Still, fans were expecting much better, and the movie ended up performing reasonably poorly at the box office.

Trivia
- Early in the film, Max Dillion has a cake in his fridge with white and green icing and yellow lighting bolts. It is a homage to the Electro costume from the comics.
- The Daily Bugle’s chief editor, J. Jonah Jameson, was mentioned multiple times in the movie but never shown, even though he is one of the main characters in Spider-Man comics. Director said he could not find anyone better than J. K. Simmons to portray the role, so he left it empty. Funny enough, the same thing happened while casting for Spiderman: Far From Home, and the studio bought J. K. Simmons back to reprise his role.
- Mary Jane’s character was in the script, and some scenes were shot as well. However, later the team decided to skip it to streamline the story.
- The dog Gwen was walking while Peter spies on her was later adopted by Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.
- Emma Stone wrote Gwen’s graduation speech personally. It’s the same speech that motivates Peter to go back and fight crime.
Spider-Man Movies in MCU
Ever since Marvel Cinematic Universe made a deal with Sony Pictures to use the character in their films, Spider-Man received the place in movies it should have earlier. MCU is the only superhero genre franchise that has made a complex universe of so many characters without breaking the continuity (and I would recommend that you watch all the Marvel movies in order). And, with the inclusion of Spider-Man in it, it feels complete. It is worth mentioning that Spider-Man has appeared in MCU movies other than the solo ones. I have mentioned all the movies in which Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has made an appearance. It is up to you to watch or skip them, depending on how much continuity of the story matters to you.
6. Captain America: Civil War
Although it’s not a Spider-Man movie, Tom Holland was introduced in this one as the titleholder for the wall climbing menace. Fans often depict Captain America: Civil War as Avengers 2.5 because it includes so many characters. Even after that, MCU gave Tom Holland a total of 8 minutes and 30 seconds of screen time, which is quite fair given the vast cast.
The movie talks about the conflict among the team members over the Sokovia Accords. It is a legal document that states all enhanced individuals should work under the government and should only be called when it’s of utmost importance. It will also need every superhuman to reveal their identity and register their name. This document causes a conflict between the Avengers and makes Steve Rogers and his associates legally criminals. To catch them, Tony Stark recruits Spider-Man as a trump card.

Trivia
- Tom Holland became the youngest actor to portray Spider-Man at the age of 19.
- MCU’s Spider-Man being chatty and excited in the fight is the closest portrayal of the comic book character.
- Directors smartly mentioned the absence of Spider-Man in all previous MCU movies by stating Peter got his power only six months before the Civil War events.
- Sharon Carter’s speech at Peggy’s funeral is taken directly from a speech that Captain America made in Amazing Spider-Man #537
- MCU’s Spider-Man suit is the first to have moving eyes, which comic illustrators heavily used to show Peter’s emotions.
7. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man became an instant hit after his introduction in Captain America: Civil War. This led to Sony Pictures finalizing the solo movies under MCU’s banner while still holding the filming and distribution rights.
Unlike previous Spider-Man movies, there is no visual depiction of the origin story in this franchise. Neither is Peter fighting big villains full-time. Instead, MCU focused on the chatty, humorous, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, which is closer to his comic book character. The movie also covers what happens to the mess left by superheroes while fighting. Such details make MCU stand out in what they do. Tony Stark’s Department of Damage Control is responsible for taking care of the mess.
Some goons found Chitauri technology and developed advanced weapons out of it. The gang is led by Toomes, who also happens to be the father of Peter’s crush. Meanwhile, Peter is using the advanced suit Tony provided. Most of the movie talks about a young kid trying to do good for society and proving to his mentor that he can do big things.

Trivia
- In an interview while promoting his movie in 2013, Tom Holland showed interest in doing a humorous and action role in the future. The reporter asked if he would like to do any superhero movie, to which he replied, “Maybe Spider-Man, in ten years’ time. The reboot of the reboot, if they do that.”
- Spider-Man suit’s AI, named Karen, is voiced by Jennifer Connelly. Her husband, Paul Bettany, is a long-time member of MCU who plays The Vision’s role and voiced J.A.R.V.I.S in previous Iron-Man movies.
- Spider-Man never uses punches in his fight; he uses his web instead. He dodges, blocks, and diverts the punches or kicks the villains. But, never punch them.
- Aunt May’s car number plate in the movie is AMF-1562. Here, AMF stands for Amazing Fantasy, 15 is the issue number of comics, and 62 is 1962, the year Spider-Man first appeared. Have a closer look at all the number plates around Peter Parker in MCU movies. It always resembles a Spider-Man comic issue related to the movie story.
- The theme music for MCU’s Spider-Man is adapted from the first animated Spider-Man television series from 1967. Composer Michael Giacchino made an orchestral version for the movies. In case you forgot, the lyrics go like, “Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can.”
8. Avengers: Infinity War
Behold! It’s the greatest movie of the MCU so far. Before you judge me for not saying Avengers: Endgame, hear me out. Infinity War is the only superhero movie that ends on a sad note where superheroes lost. Besides, I like its story better than Endgame. Ok, you can judge me now.
Avengers: Infinity War is a game-changer movie for MCU. It’s the beginning of the end of the Infinity Saga, which included all the 22 movies of storytelling. It shows the big bad Thanos’ journey of collecting all the Infinity stones to clear half the universe’s population in a snap.
Peter Parker’s role in this movie is short but essential. He joins the fight to save Tony from an ongoing attack and ends up on Titan with him and a few other characters. In this movie, Peter also becomes the Avenger officially. Besides, Tom Holland got a lot of praise for his work in this film.

Trivia
- Although it’s an Avengers movie, maximum screen time counting to 31 minutes is given to Josh Brolin’s Thanos. Moreover, the whole film talks about his quest to collect the stones and shows his journey and changing character, making him the movie’s protagonist.
- Tom Holland was not allowed to read the whole script because he had revealed too many secrets for Spider-Man: Homecoming in the past.
- Spider-Man shows strong Spider-Sense (the ability to detect danger beforehand) for the first time in this movie. Previously it appeared for a second in Captain America: Civil War.
- It’s the only Spider-Man movie in which the character dies.
- Filmmakers confirmed that Spider-Sense, a.k.a Peter Tingle in MCU, alerted Peter before his death. It added an extra layer of emotion in his father-son relationship with Tony and made his death stand out from every other in the movie.
9. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Avengers: Endgame created hype among movie fans like never before. This movie ended the Infinity Saga and provided closure to some original Avengers. It is a direct sequel to Avengers: Infinity War and took place five years from the snap. All our existing heroes have joined forces and tried their best to avenge the fallen. Whatever it takes!
Peter’s role is limited yet pivotal for his character in this movie. He understands responsibility like every Spider-Man in previous films has learned through some challenging emotions. The movie primarily focuses on the Avengers’ attempt to reverse what Thanos did. So, it leaves very little space for Spider-Man to have much screen time.

- Captain America calls Spider-Man “Queens,” giving the nod to their first conversation from Captain America: Civil War.
- In Spiderman: Homecoming, Tony tries to open the door for Peter, and he thinks of it as a hug, to which Tony responds, “We are not there yet.” In Endgame, Tony pulls Peter for a hug bringing the emotion full circle.
- The idea to create his Quantum Time Machine using a reverse Mobius strip occurs to Tony when he sees Peter’s image of holding the Stark internship upside down. The Stark internship was the cover-up for him fighting Captain America in Civil War and afterward in Homecoming to do his Spidey things.
- Tom Holland was told they are shooting a wedding scene in place of the funeral scene because he is known to spoil things accidentally.
- When the Avengers charge during the final battle, Spider-Man swings from Ant-Man’s giant hand.
10. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
It’s the second solo Spider-Man movie in the MCU, which picks up eight months after the events of Endgame. Tony has left some gadgets for Peter, but he doesn’t feel he can use them. He thinks he can take a break from his superhero stuff for a few weeks and go on a trip to Europe with his classmates. However, some elemental monsters are causing havoc in the continent, and it comes to Peter to stop them.
Mysterio, a long-time Spider-Man villain from the comics, portrays himself as a friend and helps stop the Elementals. We later discover that it was him behind all the havoc, and he is using special effects to make it look natural. Peter quickly trusts Mysterio and gives him control of some dangerous drones. Later in the movie, Mysterio uses them to cause public damage, and Peter thinks himself guilty. Peter has to overcome his fears and trust his senses to stop Mysterio from causing more trouble.

11. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
It is the only movie to create similar hype to Avengers: Endgame, and there is no doubt why Spider-Man fans like us won’t get excited. This movie is bringing the best of all the previous Spider-Man films together. Released under the MCU banner, it primarily revolves around Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. However, many earlier villains from Sam Raimi’s trilogy and Marc Webb’s film series are returning to reprise their roles.
[Warning: spoilers ahead]
No Way Home sees Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their roles as Spider-Man, with the multiverse bringing all three of our favourites together. No Way Home makes for a spectacular watch, and for long-time Spider-Man fans, this movie is a trip down memory lane, with multiple references to Tobey’s and Andrew’s parts in the movies, as well as a neat quick reference to the extremely popular Spider-Man meme (see below).

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
Marvel had to sell its character filming rights to other Studios in the late nineties because Marvel was going bankrupt. It was a time when critics didn’t respect superhero movies much, and the audience reading comics was lowering in numbers. At that time, Sony bought the rights for Spider-Man and its associated characters from Marvel. Only after the success of the first Spider-Man movie did Marvel realize the potential of such films.
Marvel was still holding rights to many other characters like Hulk, Iron-Man, Thor, Captain America, and more, which they utilized to create their universe. Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox has rights to X-men and associated characters. After the commercial success of MCU, Sony was desperate to launch something similar, and the idea to create a separate universe consisting of Spider-Man villains was born. Many of these films might not connect directly to Spider-Man as long as he is part of the MCU movies. Still, you should Watch Venom and Venom: Let There be Carnage for understanding Spider-Man villains.
Since the only superhero under Sony’s banner is Spider-Man, which also happens to be the most popular among all generations, they did some commendable job with the character in the animated movies.
12. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)
It comes next in order of Spider-Man movies because it talks about a unique idea. After watching multiple Spider-Man films, I hope you are now ok with the idea of multple Spider-Man existing together. All Spider-Man films we talked about until now are similar following the coming of age story of Peter Parker. However, with Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Sony pulled something beyond our imagination.
The standalone animated movie is part of Sony’s new project, and it is so far the most entertaining Spider-Man movie you will watch. The story is about a teenage boy named Peter Parker Miles Morales. He becomes the second Spider-Man in his universe when a radioactive spider from another universe bites him. Later, he came to know about the existence of much more Spider-Man in various universes.
The animation style looks very familiar to how comic books used to be. It also prompts sound effects and uses visual elements to add deeper meaning to the scene. Besides, it opens the door for limitless possibilities with the characters.

Trivia
- If you hit pause whenever a train goes by you will find Stan Lee in it. Every animator wanted to animate Stan Lee so they decided to use the trains for it.
- This movie employed the largest crew to work on a Sony Pictures Animation movie with 180 animators.
- The film begins with the famous phrase “With great power comes great responsibility” which is said by Cliff Robertson. He played Uncle Ben in the Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy with Tobey Maguire. The voice used in this movie is picked from the archives of Spider-Man (2002) movie due to Robertson’s demise in 2011.
- The film shows several visual recreations of scenes from previous live-action adaptations of Spider-Man. These include the popular upside-down kiss from Spider-Man (2002), the train sequence from Spider-Man 2 (2004), Peter Parker’s infamous dance montage from Spider-Man 3 (2007), and an altered version of the Tom Holland’s ferry splitting scene from Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).
- The radioactive spider crawls over spray paint cans and changes colors before it bites Miles. The same power later passed on to Miles. It also suggests that Miles might not be invisible as everybody else in the film says. Instead, he more likely changes color to blend with his environment.

Who Owns Spider-Man Rights?
Spider-Man has the most complicated rights in the history of superhero characters. Still, I tried my best to put it in a way you will understand, keeping the latest deal in mind.
Sony holds the right to create an animated show if the episode is more than 44 minutes.Marvel Studios can use the animated character only if the episode length is below 44 minutes.Sony owns the filming and distribution rights to Spider-Man solo movies. While Marvel has to co-produce them with Sony.Marvel can use Spider-Man as a side character with minimal screentime in any film they want under MCU.Marvel/Disney owns the rights to manufacture and distribute merchandise for Spider-Man.The comic character is still under the Marvel Comics banner.
